Coming Thru The Rye was Remington's first effort in using more than two horses and was his largest piece to date. To Remington this scene represented a joyful experience of cowboy and horse having completed a strenuous cattle drive of weeks on the trail. The four men and horses have taken on with reckless abandonment and are frolicking in the retirement from daily chores. This scene depicts the cowboys as they are riding in to enjoy a night on the town.
